HP Mini-note 2140 available in February
Posted by Scout on January 7, 2009

When the HP Mini-note 2133 first came out, NotebookReview.com tested a unit and came up with the following conclusion:
“HP managed to create the single most impressive ultraportable notebook on the market … and then decided to put a lackluster processor inside. If HP decides to replace the VIA processors with the new Intel Atom processors or alternative processors from Intel, the Mini-Note would become the undisputed champion of the subnotebook market.”
Their wish, along with many others, has just come true. Feast your eyes on its successor, the new HP Mini-note 2140:

Unlike the original HP netbook, the Mini 2140 now boasts a 10″ screen that will come in resolutions of either 1024×576 or 1366×768. But the real news, of course, is that the VIA C7 processor has been replaced by the faster and more powerful Intel Atom.
Laptop Magazine already scored a review of the HP Mini-note 2140, and the results should please those who’ve been holding out for something better to come up in the netbook arena (while pissing off those who bought one a little too soon). It still features a lightweight anodized aluminum body and durable metal alloy hinges designed to stand the test of time. Total weight with the 3-cell battery is 2.6 lbs or 1.19 kg - similar to the MSI Wind. The keyboard is 92% full size as well as splash-proof, with a protective coating to guard against fading. Everything about the chassis seems to scream “QUALITY!”
Battery life can last an impressive 3 hours and 32 minutes with a 3-cell battery, or 7 hours 19 minutes with a 6-cell battery that will cost you $30 more. If you’re looking for endurance, get the 6-cell, but if looks are important to you, be warned that the huge bulge it causes is not all that pleasing to the eyes. As for heat build-up, you’ll be glad to know that it runs much cooler than the 2133, thanks to the Atom and the added air vents under the chassis.
The all-important factor - price - does not disappoint. The base model of the Mini 2140 (WinXP Home, 512GB RAM, 160GB 5400 RPM HDD, 3-cell battery) will go for $499, up until probably about $629 for a unit with all the bells and whistles (6-cell battery, 160 GB 7200 RPM HDD, 2GB RAM, Windows Vista). The 1024×576 models are expected to be available in February, whereas their higher resolution siblings will be out in March, according to Laptop Mag. If PC Corner will sell it close to the peso equivalent, I might actually get myself one of these.
