Asus introduces EEE PC T91 and T101H convertible netbook tablets

Just when HP got everyone talking about the gorgeous Mini-note 2140, Asus steals the limelight and presents the arguably dreamier Asus T91. In this crowded market filled with cookie-cutter specs, Asus attempts to stand out with its newest line of touchscreen netbooks, with swiveling monitors that can be flipped 180 degrees and laid flat on the keyboard, instantly converting them into tablet PCs. I’d love to use this as my primary ebook and digital comic book reader.
The T91 will sport an Intel Atom Z520 (1.33 GHz), which is a little slower than the more common Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz), but sources say it’s able to run Windows 7 decently. We’ll see when the reviews come out. The 8.9″ screen is multi-touch, and can be controlled with fingers or a stylus. Its frame is merely 1-inch thick and weighs in at around 2 lbs (less than a kilo). It will also come standard with 1GB of RAM, Windows XP Home, a 160GB hard drive, and WiFi-N. Optional accessories include a GPS sat-nav chip and a TV tuner, for those who plan use this as an in-car entertainment center.
Sadly, it will be a long wait until it’s available for us consumers, with Asus’ CEO saying the time to market is between 3-6 months. Meanwhile, ponder whether you can live with the 8.9″ screen of the T91, or prefer the bigger 10″ screen of its sibling, the T101H, which will come with the faster Intel Atom N270. Of course, be prepared to pay a premium for the added oomph. No word yet on pricing, but I’m hoping they can keep the base model within the $449-$499 range.
