Ode to my Eneloop batteries
Posted by Scout on December 11, 2008

I like rechargeable batteries. Since you can use them several times, you’re saving money and helping the environment - two things I love to do. I’ve used many different kinds for different purposes, but nothing comes close in performance, reliability and longevity to Sanyo’s Eneloop batteries.
First, Eneloops have a very low discharge rate, such that after a year, they retain 85% of their capacity. When you buy them, they’re ready to go off the shelf, which is quite convenient. It also makes them well-suited as standby batteries. Other rechargeables, on the other hand will drain pretty quickly (some of mine are unusable after just a week in storage).
With Eneloops in my digital camera, they can last months with moderate usage. I don’t even worry about battery leak. I let the Eneloops stay inside my gadgets during long periods of time, and there isn’t any noticeable degradation in performance (of course, I don’t recommend that you do the same, I’m just forgetful). It allows stress-free photography, because no longer do you have to double-check if your batteries are charged. Since switching, I’ve almost forgotten that I have 2 spare sets of older batteries. I just don’t need them anymore.
A pack of 4 AA-sized Eneloops currently cost around Php600, and it’ll be worth every centavo you’ll spend. Once you go Eneloop, you’ll never look at other brands again (not even that drummer bunny thing).

Where can you buy eneloops in the Philippines? Are there counterfeit products to be aware of? Can you use any kind of battery charger with those batteries, or do you really have to buy the official one?
Since lesser batteries have counterfeits, Eneloops probably have theirs, too. I bought mine at SM Appliance Center (they carry other brands). You can also try Battery Specialist at either the 4th Floor of V-Mall, Greenhills, or at the 3rd Floor of Farmers, Cubao. Alternatively, you may try this site. CD-R King has Eneloops in their product list but I’m not sure if those are original (probably).
No special chargers needed - a regular charger would be compatible. I use a compact travel charger from Sony and it works fine. An advice, though, is to stay away from those “fast chargers” (claims 15mins or less). While they may work, they shorten the life span of your batteries.
