Netbooks Under 10K: Neo eXplore X1.1 UMPC

Based on Intel’s Classmate PC design, the Neo eXplore X1.1 UMPC was definitely made for kids. It was one of the earliest netbooks to be out on the market, made to compete with OLPC’s XO-1 (One Laptop Per Child), which is now being sold in Amazon on a “get 1, give 1″ basis. Now that its price has plummeted to below P10,000, they can make a great gift for your nieces and nephews this Christmas, or your inaanak which you’ve been hiding from for years (don’t we all?).

• Storage: 40Gb Hard Drive (not the small SSD !)

I particularly like the blue covering and the rugged chassis that guards against inevitable drops and other abuses children might inflict on this device. The carrying handle is also a nice touch. I’m not too pleased with its weight which is about 50% heavier than other 7″ laptops, but I suppose that’s the price to pay for having a tough outer shell.

The processor is only a Celeron M, with an Intel GMS915 chipset, so don’t expect too much out of it - no 3G games or demanding applications. The eXplore X1.1 is best suited to grade school students that you’d like to start on geekhood early in life, in the hopes that they’ll grow up to be tech titans. The Windows XP Home version goes for P9,995, while the Windows XP Pro version retails for P10,995.
