With the EEE PC, ASUS was able to successfully introduce a new laptop category on its own - small, light, simple and cheap. It turns out there’s a huge market for it, and so “netbooks” came flooding the market (not that I’m complaining). When it was launched late 2007 here in the Philippines, they were offering it for a base price of P19,000. Now it costs almost half as much.

At P9,300, you can get the Asus EEE 701 2G variant with a 2GB SSD drive, Celeron M processor, 512MB RAM, 7in. screen, WiFi and a Linux OS. Battery life is rated at 2.8hrs while body weight is at 0.92kg, making it nice to carry with you in a bag. Models with 4GB and 8GB SSDs are also available. I imagine there’s not much left in stock and PC Corner is only too happy to sell them at this low price, before they totally lose their value, what with Asus seeming to pump out a new EEE PC or two every month (making the depreciation of the older ones faster).

While it isn’t a shabby machine, 2GB of storage will frustrate all but the lightest users. The lack of Bluetooth and a webcam is also somewhat of a downer. For roughly the same amount, you can have more features and a much bigger hard drive with the Astone UMPC and the Blue H1. So now the question is, how much as you willing to pay for the EEE PC brand?
