NComputing X300 Desktop Virtualization Kit

It’s a promising concept. NComputing kits can transform a single desktop PC into virtually 4-30 computers depending on the model (making it ideal for Internet cafes, schools, & small offices). You’d still need to buy monitors, keyboards and mice, but for the processing power, all of the virtual computers will share the lone desktop PC. This probably means that heavy gaming is out of the picture, but for most people who only need to browse the web and write documents, it’s another way of saving a few pesos… or is it? Let’s do the math.

In the US, the basic model NComputing Xtenda X300 is being sold at $220 (~Php11,000), but local shops are selling it for around Php19,000 (even after VAT, that’s still pretty high). Now one X300 kit can extend your computer to four PCs (1 real + 3 virtual). Since we’ve already seen that the cheapest new desktop we can buy is around 10K, and it’s subset monitor + keyboard + mouse combo is around 3K, the total cost is as follows:

1 Desktop PC………………… 10K
1 Ncomputing X300………… 19K
3 Monitor+KB+Mouse……… 9K
===========================
TOTAL ………………………. 38K

Compare this to what you would’ve shelled out if you bought four desktop PCs outright, which is about 40K - a difference of only 2K. Not much, but savings nonetheless. You can also add electricity savings since only one power-hungry desktop will be running instead of four.

If you had two X300 kits, you can extend your PC to 7 computers (1 real and 6 virtual). The calculations will then go like this:

1 Desktop PC…………………. 10K
2 Ncomputing X300………….. 38K
6 Monitor+KB+Mouse………… 18K
===========================
TOTAL…………………………. 66K

Compared to buying 7 low-cost PCs outright, you would have saved approximately 4K. That’s with severely lower computing power but with significant electricity savings. Is it worth it? I’ll leave that for you to decide.
