Low-cost smartphone? Try the Nokia E63
Posted by Scout on November 28, 2008

Some business-friendly smartphones can set you back up to 50K++, which I find ridiculously expensive. I’d rather buy a laptop with that kind of money, thank you very much. It’s a good thing Nokia is beefing up its budget smartphone line, and one of them is the new Nokia E63. It is said to be the little brother of the well-received E71, cutting back on some of the features and slashing the price in half.
The Nokia E63 has a QVGA display, full QWERTY keyboard, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G (UMTS), 2MP camera, Email support, office productivity applications, PDF viewer, web browser, standard 3.5mm headphone port, microSD slot, and a standby time of up to 20 days on a single charge, among others. But the best thing about it is that this phone will start retailing at P11,000 - possibly even less. It doesn’t have a touchscreen, but hey, we have the LG Cookie for that.

I think you are mistaken. What makes this cheap is because it does NOT support 3G but supports GPRS/EDGE connectivity
I believe it does. If you look at the specs above copied from Nokia’s site, under Data Network it says:
WCDMA 900/2100 or 850/1900 or 850/2100, maximum speed 384/384 kbps (DL/UL)
Now WCDMA (also known as UMTS) is 3G technology, though it’s limited to 384kbps. It’s a downgrade from Nokia E71’s theoretical 3G (HSDPA) speed of up to 3.6Mbps. That’s part of the reason why it’s cheaper.
